Shopping List – 8 things I bought in January 2018

It's way too easy to order things online. I'm well aware I order things I don't always need!

A month has passed and I’m back to wrap up all my tech-related purchases made throughout the January 2018. These purchases are done for various reasons, sometimes because I have a project in mind, sometimes because I’m sad and I need some tech retail therapy! Either way, I hope you find a gem or two on my shopping list for yourself!

Shopping List – January 2018

I probably should let you know, that products listed on here are paid for by me (no sponsored content) but I do use affiliate links, so if you buy something through the links provided I get a small kickback to fund my future projects… or coffee. With that aside let’s take a look at the crap I buy sometimes! Prices could change, I’m listing the current prices for you.

TeckNet Bluetooth Mouse

My wife’s mouse died. Usually, when these things happen, I hear loud ‘Help’ call from her office – and my assistance is needed immediately. The USB dongle has been damaged so badly, that I figured out I would pick a mouse with Bluetooth. It’s not the first TekNet mouse I got her, the other one is serving her well at work. The mouse is OK. I can’t compare it with the productivity monster I use, but after putting 2 drained rechargeable batteries it simply worked. I’m impressed enough with 24 months battery life, and no USB taking dongles that I will order another one for myself (my laptop has only 2 USB ports).

Heat Shrink Tube

I was browsing the deals on Banggood the other day and I’ve seen a great deal on Heat Shrink Tubes. I know I only just both some and it will be a while before I run out, but at $3 – it was a perfect impulse purchase! Plus my OCD requires me to fill my organiser fully, as currently only half of the box is populated with heat shrinking material.

(Banggood $3.55/AliExpress $2.72)

Multimeter Probe Test Leads

Currently, I own a single set of cables. This is problematic as I have to share the cables between my bench power supply and the multimeter. It was long coming, new cables should arrive soon. Another impulse buy around $3!

(AliExpress $4.93/Banggood $4.82)

Ethernet CAT6 Flat Cables

I wired half of my house, you can read about it here. I still had some cables left, but the spares were like 5m long. The collection of the hard-wired devices grew since and I needed few shorter cables to get everything hooked up. CAT6 means future proofing. Custom length means no more dealing with excess cabling.

8W USB Portable Iron Solder Tips

I broke the soldering tip (my bad) on my portable soldering iron. here is the dilemma – should I buy 2 replacement tips for $4 or an entire USB iron for about the same price? I went with the more environmentally friendly option. Now I have 2 tips that don’t fit my iron! I will figure out the way eventually, but I’m slightly annoyed. The collar of the iron is slightly too tight to get the tip through. I guess next time I’m not going to think about the planet as much!

(AliExpress$2.87/Banggood $2.79)

Solder Welding Paste

As a proud owner of the soldering station with a heat gun, I thought at some point I will try to solder SMD components. To do this you really need a soldering paste. The container looked much bigger in the pictures. It’s tiny, but let’s face it, I don’t need a spoonful of the paste to get the job done!

(AliExpress $11.60/Banggood $6.29)

Replacement batteries for Nikon D5200

It’s been a few years since I got my camera. Due to YouTube the battery gets a fair use.  I started to observe the battery degradation and it’s time to get new ones. They are not the original batteries, but that’s OK, I will use it with the battery grip to extend the camera power on time even further.

(AmazonUK £14.99/AmazonUS $25.59)

Battery Grip for Nikon D5200

I’m shooting more videos and the videos are considerably longer now. It’s time to go dual batteries. I had stopped the shooting multiple times due to lack of juice. Waiting for the battery to charge feels like wasting my time, so it’s time to fix this. I should be able to record more than an hour of footage between each charge.

(AmazonUK £14.69/AmazonUS $21.99)

That’s sums up the list for the January 2018. We shall see what I gonna buy next month soon! Use social media to let me know if you came across something you think I might be interested in.
